Subject #Title fit for experimentation


Well it was some kind of house by some kind of road
With some kind of peculiar dress code

ok ah wells.
and apparentally for the weird vocational test
i finished like.. half an hour before everyone else.
including kia yong.
LOL
my answers must either be totally wrong.
or i'm way smarter than i give myself credit for.
i think.. it's the latter
HAHAHAHHAHAA.

i'm just really happy right now.
and i have no idea why.

it might be the "That thing you do" movie i just watched.
you know you know?
that song they play every year at orientation?
yea there's a story behind it.

They suffered kind of the same fate as Beatles.
which was...kind of sad.
ah wells.

which is kind of ironic.
since i'm happy,
after a sad movie.
or is that paradoxical?

I think it's just the music I'm listening to.
OR it may be the fact that i'm taking a full-day break.
(again, i know, i know)
but it feels so good.
like.. out of this world.
especially since 'this world'
has nothing but

demand
supply
earthquakes
cyclones
migration
wide sargasso sea
Proof
elliptical curves
differentiation

Bleh.
ok... now for... notion for the day!

I believe that "written examinations should not be the bulk of an examined test on one's knowledge"

in fact, it should be the minority.
think about it.
We have three types of learners.
And most people would fall in either one of them
either visual learner
audio learner
or Kinesthetic learner.

Now, just as how everyone learns and picks up information different,
students would also have different methods of displaying these information.

Some would be excellent in writing them down,
as it provides them a concrete show of facts.
Some would prefer to do it verbally,
for the flow of points enables them to easily link facts.
And some others would prefer to show these facts,
to proof that they are real.

Now written examination only helps in one section of students.
and far from being 'satisfying the majority' it is in fact 'killing the majority'
why do i say that?
in a Singapore studying environment,
one's information is gotten through notes, lectures.
Written, and verbal.
Having written examination would FORCE students to study through notes.
as it is the method they can easily associate to repeat these facts in written examinations.

This would in fact cause them to 'turn-off' when there are audio information(lectures)
And we start blaming them for not listening in class.

Then there's the mundanitiy of notes.
What do the notes do?
They feed you.

Information Point A
Sub-Point A.
Example.
Information Point B

and so on.

There are rarely any hands-on.
and if there are,
instead of encouraging a student to discover for himself/herself,
the fast pace of today's Singapore syllabus
forces educators to feed them what they are suppose to do.
An example:

Study Point--To show a student that matters expand when in contact with heat.

Instead of going: "Alright, just take whatever and try it out. The first person to find out an accurate experimentation method in proving/disproving this wins a prize."

We manufacture thousands and thousands of similar, no make that IDENTICAL worksheets telling students. "First you take a ball, then you take a ring, and then you...."

Now, how does that help a student learn that in ANY way?

So, back to written examination, this forces students , over time, to learn that creativity comes at no prize, especially when all they do is get force-fed information and be told it's true. For example, we all learn about inselbergs, we learn about..caves, we learn about English literature, we learn about historical artifacts.Yet, how many of us have actually SEEN this thing with our own eyes?

For all we know it may just be hogwash.
Take Pluto.
Notice the reaction?
The shock?
Just google.
"reactions to pluto not being in solar system"
see how many people were shocked.
There were even students ASKING the scientists to 'put pluto back'
It just goes to show how our rigid education system
have bred students to believe whatever the syllabus has told them.

Thus. Written examination sucks.
[I know, I'm just lazy to write anymore]
[how ironic. I'm writing this instead of studying.]
[for what? a WRITTEN EXAMINATION. oh the irony.]
